A Taste of Nova Scotia

Bluenose in Halifax HarbourCombining this marvellous add-on with a holiday to New England, you will be struck by how quickly the landscapes change in Nova Scotia. Over the course of just six days, you discover the South Shore, the silent green hills that lie inland, the fertile Annapolis Valley, and the French Shore, which is dotted with French-speaking villages clustered around traditional Acadian churches. Nova Scotia’s rich history is visible at every step, not least in the towns and inns at which you stay.

Discover four different regions

The boat from Bar Harbor docks in Yarmouth in the late morning, giving you the rest of the day to potter along the coast, stopping as the mood takes you at idyllic villages and panoramic headlands crowned by lighthouses. At historic Shelburne, you stay one night at the Cooper’s Inn, then continue along the South Shore. One of the main attractions along this section of the coast is the wildlife-rich Seaside Adjunct Kejimkujik National Park.

Lunenburg waterfrontThe Mariner King Inn in Lunenburg is your base for the next two nights, with plenty in and around this Unesco World Heritage Site town to fill your day. The following drive reveals completely different scenery, passing the Kejimkujik National Park as it leads almost due north across wild hills. Your destination is Annapolis Royal and the Queen Anne Inn, where again you stay two nights. You could tour the northern coast on your day here, but you may prefer to explore the Annapolis Valley instead so as to discover yet another landscape, this time of rolling apple orchards. The fascinating drive back to Yarmouth heads west along St Mary’s Bay then past several Acadian settlements. On the return to Boston, you will need to stay overnight at either the Ullikana or Squire Tarbox Inn, depending on the timing of the ferry.
