New England
Classic Inns of Character
Whether you have opted for one of our suggested touring itineraries or are creating your own
holiday, here are descriptions of the inns that we feature. They differ in style, but common to
all is an excellent location ideal for leisurely exploration and, more importantly, first-rate
hospitality. Extra night prices include the cost of extending your car hire.
Cape Cod, Massachusetts
Cranberry Inn, Chatham
It is hard to resist Chatham, with its colourful harbour, good restaurants and pretty Main Street, on which the Cranberry Inn is located. The inn’s traditions of hospitality date back to 1830, and there is an ‘old world’ charm to the cosy bedrooms, public rooms and veranda set with rocking chairs. Behind the inn is a cranberry bog where you may spot deer, turtles and rare birds. Extra night prices from £84 per person.
Vermont/New Hampshire Border
Centennial House, Northfield
We recommend the Centennial House in Northfield as a place at which to break the journey from Cape Cod to the Green Mountains. Superbly located near the banks of the broad Connecticut River, with views over verdant lawns to distant hills, the Inn has just eight spacious bedrooms, ensuring a genuinely personal touch in the care of every guest. Each room is both elegant and individual, decorated in period furnishings to suit the room name - from Plimoth to Strawberry Banke to Emily Dickinson - and combining both classic New England style with thoroughly modern comfort. The morning sun streams into some of the public rooms, perfect places to eat breakfast or simply relax. Extra night prices from £64 per person.
Green Mountains, Vermont
Blueberry Hill Inn, Moosalamoo
One of the great attractions of this inn is its remote
setting by a small lake deep within the National
Forest. The food is another. Dinners, enjoyed with
other guests around the long table, are gastronomic
affairs, and breakfasts are excellent, with home-made
muffins available all morning. We include tickets for
the Shelburne Museum and a wildlife tour is available. Extra night prices from £83 per
person (dinner included).
Fox Creek Inn, Chittenden
Originally the country home of William Barstow, one of Thomas Edisons collaborators, this is a charming inn set in 6.5 acres of tranquil woodland near a trout stream, Fox Creek. Bedrooms are beautifully appointed and there are several comfortable seating areas. Dinner is taken in the candlelit dining room, with excellent dishes prepared from fresh ingredients and an extensive wine list with choices from all over the world. Jim and Sandy, your hosts, go out of their way to ensure you enjoy your stay and will be happy to arrange canoe hire (pay locally) for you to explore nearby Chittenden Reservoir. Extra
night prices from £102 per
person (dinner included).
Crisanver House, Shrewsbury
Close to the Appalachian Trail, Crisanver House is everything you imagine a New England country inn should be - an attractive clapboard farmhouse building that dates back to around 1800, offering the highest quality comfort, with plenty of imaginative personal touches and wonderful hospitality. Each of the lovely rooms and suites is named after one of the mountain peaks visible from the Inn, which has panoramic views - in warm weather you can enjoy the vista to the full while dining alfresco. You can wander in extensive flower and vegetable gardens, and your talented chef - the owner, Carol Calotta - loves to use local produce in the menus, which change daily, using highlights such as tasty Vermont mushrooms or local forest fruits for berry cobbler. A tennis court and outdoor swimming pool complete the scene. Extra night prices from £94 per person (dinner included).
Three Mountain Inn, Jamaica
In a peaceful setting in the quiet village of Jamaica, Three Mountain Inn is a charming white-painted building in rambling cottage style, where you are welcomed and made to feel at home by Ed and Jennifer Dorta-Duque. Overlooking the woodland and trails of the Jamaica State Park, the late-18th-century building has 15 rooms which each offer a sense of real luxury and comfort while continuing the cottage theme in their attractive decoration. The award-winning restaurant has real log fires during the colder months in its series of intimate, comfortable rooms, and you can really relax here while enjoying excellent cuisine making full use of fresh, local fruit and vegetables. Extra night prices
from £72 per person.
White Mountains, New Hampshire
Notchland Inn, near Franconia State Park
You are greeted with real warmth by Ed Butler and Les Schoof (and their two dogs!) at this intimate, prettily decorated 1920s inn at the base of Crawford Notch (Pass) near the Franconia State Park. For dinner, sample the inn’s imaginative cuisine (available Wednesday to Sunday; pay locally) or head to a local restaurant. Surrounding the inn are 100 acres of award-winning grounds, which you are welcome to explore. Extra night prices from £81 per person.
Inn at Thorn Hill, Jackson
Set on a hillside on the edge of the delightful village of Jackson, this is a beautifully appointed inn with more of a hotel feel and facilities to match, including a spa, and a restaurant serving top-quality, refined cuisine, which is complemented by an award-winning wine-list. A special wine-tasting session with owner Jim Cooper is included exclusively for Inntravel guests. Extra night prices from £112 per person (dinner included).
Down East Maine, Maine
Ullikana, Bar Harbor
All our New England inns are special places, but this one in the heart of Bar Harbor is particularly so. Roy and Hélène are genial hosts, happy to share their knowledge of the Acadia National Park with you (they provide two bicycles for Inntravel guests if you wish to explore on two wheels). The terrace overlooking Frenchman Bay is usually the setting for the sumptuous breakfast feasts, while the elegant sitting room is the place to chat with fellow guests in the afternoons. The handsome bedrooms are in the Yellow House just opposite the main inn. We can organise bird-watching tours for you with a local expert. Extra night
prices from £78 per person.
Squire Tarbox Inn, Wiscasset
If you want more time to explore the coast on the journey from Bar Harbor to Boston, this characterful 17th-century inn just off Route 1, more or less half-way to the city, makes an ideal stopover near the sea. Hosts Mario and Roni offer a warm welcome, and the usual high standard of breakfast. Choose to dine here (pay locally) or in one of charming Wiscasset’s other eateries. Extra night
prices from £76 per person.
Boston
Beacon Hill Hotel
No holiday is complete without a stay in cultured Boston, and we highly recommend two or three nights after your flight, which will also give you time to adjust. Located in Boston's most elegant and historic neighbourhood, the cobbled Beacon Hill district, Peter and Cecilia Rait’s superb inn is unusually small and intimate for a city hotel. The two adjoining, federal-style buildings house just thirteen snug and bright bedrooms, all of them stylishly decorated with excellent attention to detail and creature comforts. Here, you are close to Boston Common, start of the Freedom Trail, as well as many choice restaurants. Alternatively, you can dine at the inn's own atmospheric bistro (pay locally), which is popular with Bostonians for its contemporary French cuisine and hearty brunch for those who missed breakfast!
