The Green & White Mountains
This holiday is a marvellous mix of walking and touring
in the Green Mountains of Vermont and the White
Mountains of New Hampshire. We have chosen inns not
only for the warm welcome extended by the
innkeepers but also for their superb locations - close to
hiking trails and surrounded by majestic, wild scenery.
Depending on the weather or as the mood takes you,
you are free to choose between walking and touring;
wondering at the vastness of the land or visiting
charming villages and towns.
The rolling Green Mountains
To recharge your batteries after the
flight, you begin with a night in Boston with the option of adding extra nights to explore this historic city further. The
following morning, you take a leisurely
drive north into the grandeur of
Vermont’s Green Mountains, an impressive barrier of high forested
mountains running from Québec in the north to the Berkshire Hills
of Massachusetts in the south, crossing the mighty Connecticut River
along the way. You spend three nights at the welcoming Crisanver
House near Shrewsbury, perched high on a green hillside, with sweeping
views over the rolling tapestry of Vermont’s mountains.
There are
countless hiking options nearby, from climbing the spruce-clad
Okemo Mountain to the south, or Killington Peak to the north. You
can follow the Ice Bed Trail amongst dramatic glacial scenery, or walk
a section of the famed Appalachian Trail itself, which runs for 2,100
miles from Georgia to Maine. You may choose to head south by car
to take the scenic Mount Equinox Skyline Drive for fine views across
the state or to visit nearby Manchester or the pretty village of Dorset.
On leaving Shrewsbury, you head north
to the Blueberry Hill Inn, located in the
heart of the Moosalamoo region at the
foot of the Romance Mountains. Walk
across silent mountain slopes carpeted
with blueberries while following a trail
from Lake Dunmore to Rattlesnake
Cliffs or take a reflective stroll along
the Robert Frost interpretative trail.
Frost endeared a nation with his
atmospheric descriptions of this
alluring landscape and you too will be charmed by this
awe-inspiring scenery.
The wild White Mountains
Leaving the inn, you take a splendid drive east into New Hampshire’s
imposing White Mountains, very different in character to those of
Vermont. You have plenty of time to appreciate the majesty of the
scenery from Notchland Inn, with wonderful walking trails nearby. On
your days here, you can choose trails ascending noble Mount
Washington, the highest peak in New Hampshire (or take the historic
cog railway - pay locally), or take the Davis Path up Mount Crawford; explore
the Franconia State Park or follow the Flume Path, a system of boardwalks and
stairways that leads through a deep, narrow granite chasm and on to
the Liberty Cascades and the Wildwood Path. The options are many
and varied, but wherever you go, you will be left with an indelible
imprint of this imposing landscape to cherish forever.
