Through the Heart of the High Alps
From Lucerne to the Matterhorn by rail

  • increasingly dramatic scenery
  • incredible journeys included in travel pass
  • marvel at Mount Rigi, the Eiger, the Jungfrau and the Matterhorn
  • range of winter activities at Grindelwald
  • atmospheric 4-star hotels

Journey from Lucerne to Zermatt by rail and the scenery – arguably at its most romantic under a thick blanket of snow – will never cease to amaze you with ever more impressive views. Combine this with atmospheric 4-star hotels offering high standards of comfort and service, and you have the ingredients for a truly memorable holiday.

Not many people realise that the Matterhorn is not the tallest of the Valais’ mountains – at 4,634 metres, the Dufourspitze boasts an extra 156 metres – but its striking profile certainly makes it the most fêted.

Your adventure starts in the handsome lakeside city of Lucerne, from where you travel into the heart of the Bernese Oberland for three nights in the mountain village of Grindelwald, a great place to try your hand at a variety of winter activities or simply sit back and appreciate the mountain scenery in all its glory. You then continue south by train once more to Zermatt, a chic village nestling amid a ring of peaks over 4,000 metres high. At all three bases, we include thrilling excursions high into the mountains so that you can admire some of Switzerland’s most iconic peaks at close quarters: Mount Rigi, the Jungfrau, the Eiger and the unmistakable Matterhorn, the most celebrated of them all.
