Steeped in tradition, this peaceful mountain region of central Norway is the land of Peer Gynt, the fictional hero created by one of the country’s most lauded writers. It is an area of great scenic beauty with the impression of being in the spiritual heart of the nation.
This is a place with a really wide appeal – not only does it suit anyone who likes to get away from it all on holiday, with fantastic cross-country skiing, but it’s also great for families. What’s more, the food is the best I’ve sampled in Norway.

Here, you will find the attractive small settlement of Gålå, and the Gålå Høgfjellshotell. With its cosy atmosphere, outstanding restaurant and sweeping views across a lake to the Jotunheimen Mountains beyond, this is a top-quality hotel that earns consistently high praise from guests for its warm hospitality. The great thing here is the direct access from the door to brilliant cross-country skiing, with good downhill slopes and other winter activities nearby. There is a weekly programme of skiing activities, while the hotel lays on its own special events over Christmas and New Year, both of which are magical occasions here.
