  • great downhill and cross-country skiing for all
  • high-quality hotel with pool and good food
  • close to a lively village
  • ideal for families

The great mountain moorland region of Hardangervidda lies above the fjords of western Norway, a snowy wilderness that is a paradise for winter holidays. Here, set by a frozen lake, the lively village of Geilo is renowned for its relaxed atmosphere and superb skiing – cross-country ski trails start from the foot of the village and link to the extensive ski domain in the fells above, while there is also easy access to the fantastic downhill pistes.

My favourite runs are the reds and blues that cut through the forest to the east of Geilohovda; short and sharp, they offer technical challenges while being incredibly quiet and very natural.

Staff travel diary

With this irresistible combination of a high-quality hotel and a good-sized, friendly village offering equally fantastic cross-country and downhill skiing, it is no surprise that Geilo is a place with a very wide appeal, attracting families with children of all ages (including teenagers) during the school holidays, and couples looking for some great skiing during the quieter months of January and March.
