Beyond the Arctic Circle, the magical landscapes of Lapland, across which herds of reindeer roam freely, are bathed in a special light. December and January are months of surreal and beautiful twilight, though by February, the region enjoys nine hours of daylight. Consisting of two villages surrounded by seven fells, snow-sure Ylläs is a paradise for skiers.

The great thing about the Ylläshumina is that you can cross-country ski from the door, and it doesn’t take long to get onto the fells. So vast is the domain that you can often ski without seeing another soul – I loved the tranquillity – yet we always felt very safe because the trails and waymarking are so well organised.
