This wild and beautiful side of Algarve reveals itself to be a land of orange tree groves, quiet gold-sand beaches, and a pervading sense of history with ancient forts and tales of famous wayfarers. Located near the historic harbour town of Lagos, your acclaimed country house hotel (quinta) is well positioned for exploring both westwards along the exquisite coastline of the natural park and into the rugged hills of the little-known interior, a timeless area offering great walking.
When researching the routes, we spotted 40 species of flower in the first 500 metres of the walk near Silves, including sombre bee, yellow bee, tongue and mirror orchids.

In spring, these landscapes are all the more beguiling thanks to the astounding variety of wild flowers which flourish here. Our six walking routes should (conditions permitting) show you a wide selection of Algarve's flora in all its glory, with detailed notes and a flower guide and CD to help you with identification. The limestone cliffs and headlands support both a typical maritime flora such as the sand cachrys (Cachrys libanotis), the yellow sea aster (Asteriscus maritimus) and sea lavender (Limonium ovalifolium), alongside a rich lime-loving meadow and wayside flora, including a variety of orchids. Inland, the acidic soil of the Monchique Sierra is ideal for acacias, fine camellias and strawberry trees, while you may well spot deep blue Peruvian scilla (Scilla peruviana), the pink silene with spoon shaped leaves, Silene obtusifolia, and the little pale pink antirrhinum, Misopates orontium, while walking in the Barrocal area.
