Around the Vaudoise Alps

Lake Geneva - an invigorating landscape of jagged ridges & wide green valleys

  • self-guided hotel-to-hotel walking, luggage transported
  • traditional, welcoming hotels
  • dramatic high mountain scenery
  • exhilarating walking

Rising abruptly from the Rhône Valley beyond the eastern end of Lake Geneva (Lac Leman), the Vaudoise Alps is a beautifully green mountain region that reaches impressive heights. With classic Alpine landscapes of jagged limestone peaks, wide green valleys and wooded ridges, the Vaudoise is dotted with small, traditional villages nestling amid some of Switzerland’s most spectacular scenery. In the furthest reaches of the range, deep within the forests of Norway spruce, European larch and Arolla pine, small numbers of the elusive brown bear, wolf and lynx make their home, though you are far more likely to see marmots, bearded vultures and chamois. Above the treeline, the high meadows are awash with flowers in the spring and summer months, including the rare and delicate Edelweiss.
From your hotel in Leysin, you are rewarded with what is commonly regarded as the best view in Switzerland. Simply awe-inspiring!

Walking here is an absolute delight, with the option, if you so wish, of taking advantage of the efficient mountain transport network to shorten some routes. The paths afford some of the most scintillating panoramas you can imagine – gaze out across the countless jutting peaks that form the ‘roof of Switzerland’, all the while feeling the dramatic presence of Les Diablerets Glacier which dominates your immediate surroundings. A popular ski area in winter, this corner of the Alps is relatively quiet at other times, meaning you often have the trails to yourselves – another reason, if one were needed, to choose this idyllic region.
