Spain’s northern coast, the Costa Verde (‘Green Coast’) is fully deserving of its name – lush hills and pastureland tumble down to grassy cliffs which in turn frame secluded beaches of virgin sand. Behind all this rise the Picos de Europa Mountains whose jagged limestone peaks provide a striking backdrop while you walk and explore in this alluring region.
The human impact on the landscape is subtle, in harmony with the glorious broad-leaved forest. And in early summer, when the whitebeams are still shimmering pale among holly, beech, rowan, hazel, oak and ash, interspersed with meadows full of asphodels, it is at its most enchanting.
Stephen Venables, The Guardian
Spend some time at the charming Posada del Valle in the Sueve Sierra and you can discover the many faces of this glorious region either by car or on foot. We provide notes for several rewarding walks, both in the mountains and along the coast, and you can use your hire car to visit prehistoric caves, pre-Romanesque churches, the handsome city of Oviedo and the string of timeless fishing villages which runs along the Atlantic Coast.
