Green and unspoiled, Asturias is dominated by the magnificent mountain range of the Picos de Europa, just a few miles inland from the Atlantic Coast of quiet beaches, sweeping bays and enticing fishing ports. There is a distinctly Celtic feel to the region and its generous people – cider is served in the bars and restaurants, and traditional music, including haunting bagpipe tunes, played at the fiestas. Walking amid the mountains here is a magical experience.
Snow-capped summits slowly subside into orchid-pricked pastures, and your final leg is a grandstand walk along the cliff-tops to La Pereda.
Sunday Times
This classic mountain route takes you through some of Spain’s most splendidly dramatic landscapes, from the wild and remote-feeling Picos de Europa Mountains, which shelter rare birds and animals, to the rugged Atlantic Coast with its fishing ports and sandy bays, then west to the Sueve Sierra, where you finish with three nights at the charming Posada del Valle. Besides the scenery, one of the holiday’s greatest features is the opportunity to stay in authentic Asturian casonas – atmospheric village houses offering delicious traditional cooking, charming accommodation and a genuine welcome in inspirational surroundings.
