About Menorca >Despite boasting more beaches than the other three Balearic Islands combined, Menorca remains wonderfully unspoiled, characterised by small coves, green rolling hills, and extensive wetlands which are home to king quails, egrets, storks and night herons, among others. In fact, some 220 birds have been recorded, along with 1000 plants (including 60 endemic species), and nowadays large parts of the island have been designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Menorca’s history is equally rich, including a period of British occupation, but perhaps the most interesting chapter is the Bronze Age – there are frequent reminders of the Talaiotic culture in the form of cone-shaped stone towers, ‘taulas’ and Europe’s largest Bronze Age necropolis. Naturally, the excellent cuisine features plenty of fish and seafood – try seabass baked in rock salt, or caldereta de llagosta (lobster stew) – along with sobresada (spicy sausage) and pork (llom amb col is pork and pine nuts wrapped in cabbage leaves).

This is perfect country for gentle walks and cycle rides that lead down to the coast, itself a wonderful place to explore and discover ancient watchtowers and historic forts that have guarded these strategic seaways for centuries. With grand ports, pretty fishing villages and traditional market towns, Menorca has so much to offer, not least the excellent cuisine and fine wines.

Ciutadella is a real joy - warm pastel-coloured stone buildings, wide open squares and delightful restaurants along the harbour - the perfect place to while away a few leisurely hours.

On this break, you will gain a real appreciation of this magical island as you savour the sights, aromas and flavours of the Mediterranean's crowning jewel. From your high-quality base in the south-eastern corner of the island, you are perfectly placed to walk along one of the many inviting paths that explore this extraordinary coastline of tiny, pine-fringed coves guarded by crumbling watchtowers; or to cycle down quiet lanes to discover a fascinating history of Bronze Age Talayotic remains, Moorish culture and British imperialism.
