About Mallorca >Mallorca is distinctly Mediterranean in character, both in its ways of life and its landscapes. What is most astonishing is the variety of scenery on such a relatively small island. At its heart lies a gently rolling plain whose almond groves provide a beautiful display of blossom each spring. This is bordered to the south and east by the hills which frame the island’s rugged, lesser-known coastline, while to the north rises the Tramuntana Sierra, whose craggy limestone peaks plunge into the sea. Aleppo pines, holm oaks, olives, carob and orange trees predominate, the latter bearing their main crop in January. The island’s gastronomy is excellent, the sea providing a range of fish – one of the most popular of which is sea-bass, sometimes baked in rock-salt – and seafood. Savour dishes such as caldereta de sambfaina, a lobster casserole; sopa mallorquina, made with bread, garlic and leeks; the ratatouille-style tumbet; and llom amb col – pork and pine nuts wrapped in cabbage leaves.

You are sure to be amazed by the drama of the scenery of north-west Mallorca – here, the rugged mountains of the Tramuntana Sierra plunge into the sea, and villages perch precariously on the slopes above tiny coves. This beautiful Sierra offers the island’s best walking – old paved mule tracks wind through wooded valleys, between terraces of olive and citrus groves, and high above the coast. The scent of lemons fills the air, butterflies dance around your feet, and the views are simply astonishing.
Our four-night, 4-star New Year specials here at the Hotel Valldemossa are a luxurious treat, with the emphasis squarely on indulgence. We include a hire car and walking notes so that you can explore the mountains and coast during the day (unwind afterwards in the spa and indoor pool), but the highlight is New Year’s Eve, when you are treated to a gastronomic gala dinner, something you will remember for years.
