About Tenerife >Tenerife is not only the largest of the Canary Islands, but also the most scenically diverse. The south is arid, while the lesser-visited northwest is humid and fertile, the rocky coastline giving way to banana plantations interspersed with expanses of black sand, beyond which are the forested lower slopes of Mount Teide, the peak which dominates the island. Its 3,718-metre summit is just 13km from the coast and is the highest in the Atlantic and also in Spain. It rises from a massive volcanic crater, designated a national park in recognition of the stark beauty of the colourful lunar landscape and the wildlife – including 50 plant species endemic to the Canary Islands – which thrives despite the aridity. Perhaps unsurprisingly given its position some 300km off the African coast, Tenerife’s traditional gastronomy is closer to African cuisine than Spanish. Fresh fish features widely on menus, as do rabbit and goat, and the fruit that grows all year round in the eternal spring climate.

With expanses of black sand, green pine forests, red rock formations, crimson lava fields and white clouds which sometimes billow like a skirt around the waist of El Teide, Spain’s highest peak, Tenerife is an island of many different colours. It is also an island of stark contrasts, its topography as dramatic as the volcanic activity that shaped it so many millennia ago, and walking here is immensely rewarding.

To explore Tenerife’s little-known north-west corner is to discover a side to the island that few visitors experience, and it is great fun to join villagers dancing in Garachico's square at New Year. Spend your days walking and exploring. Here, inspirational views stretch in clear weather far across the sea and up to El Teide, whose towering peak surveys the varied landscapes. Our suggested walks reveal the fertile coastal plain (dotted with banana plantations) and the alternating expanses of pine forest and black volcanic sand that lie behind it, while we also highly recommend visiting the desert-like lava fields of the Teide National Park above the cloud line. We provide a hire car so that you can access the best walking – or combine walking with sightseeing and scenic drives.
