personal guide in the mountains
The ancient culture, vivid colours and sharp contrasts of Morocco have a magic entirely their own – from the vibrant bustle of the souks (markets) in Marrakesh to the snow-crested peaks of the great Atlas Mountains. On this holiday you can taste this diversity in authentic settings that bring you close to the centuries-old lifestyle of the Berber people, once nomadic, now dwelling in the remote hamlets that dot the mountain slopes beneath Djebel Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa.
After an early night and a hearty breakfast of boiled eggs, fresh bread and jam, it was time to do as the Berbers do: walk. We set off with our guide Abdul - an energetic 30-year-old with a cheeky grin and passion for the history and culture of his country.
Nicola Iseard, The Observer
To explore the valleys that nestle far below Djebel Toubkal is to discover far-reaching views and surprisingly fertile landscapes coated with orchards, almond groves and wheat fields, and dotted with hamlets built of adobe that clamber up the slopes. You walk at your own pace accompanied by your own Berber guide who knows the mountain paths intimately and who really helps to bring the holiday alive for you – the perfect way to discover this magnificent region. One of the highlights of the holiday is the Douar Samra, high in the mountains, a unique place to stay offering as authentic a taste of Berber life as you are likely to get.
