Extend your stay
If you are flying via Rome, enjoy the treasures of the city by adding two nights at the 3-star Hotel Mozart situated close to the famous Spanish Steps.
  • self-guided hotel-to-hotel walking, luggage transported
  • easy walking with plenty of time for cultural visits
  • stay next to Italy's largest volcanic lake
  • learn about the mysterious Etruscans
  • walk on exquisite Giglio island

You begin in historic Orvieto, with its magnificent volcanic pedestal, before walking firstly through Lazio and the volcanic area around Lake Bolsena, and then on into the Etruscan heartland of Tuscany, where a landscape of wide open plains lead into the Maremma. The Maremma is cowboy country, the land of the butteri, and now incorporating the Maremma National Park along the southern coastline.
Ascend to the watchtower in the centre of the peninsula and from here walk through oleander and thyme to the old lighthouse which affords breathtaking views towards idyllic Giglio Islands.

You reach the coast at rugged Monte Argentario, once an island and now connected to the mainland by two sand bars, connecting the rugged, mountainous island to the mainland. It is said that the name comes from the bright flashes of silver from the olive trees that still cover its slopes. After exploring here, you can take a boat trip to the picturesque island of Giglio, the largest of the Tuscan islands, for more leisurely walking.
