The twelve major islands of the Dodecanese archipelago lie in the idyllic azure waters of the southern Aegean Sea where the warm, golden sun shines down on communities of surprisingly different character. This is certainly true of our three chosen neighbouring islands – Kalimnos, Patmos and Leros – which all have their very own distinct character and allure.
For over two hours I didn't meet another person, the only signs of life a cluster of strange, spinning-top butterflies and a steady clattering sound as each roll of waves dragged more pebbles into the sea.
Rhiannon Batten, The Independent
On Kalimnos, the bright sunlight reflects off the white cliffs beneath which its inhabitants once made a living below the sea, diving in the crystal-clear waters for sponges; on Patmos, the Greek Orthodox religion has long been the centre of island life, with the impregnable fortress of the monastery of Saint John, who lived in a cave on the island, at its heart; while on beguiling Leros, undulating, comforting hills surround pretty fishing villages and deep bays that played a strategic role during many historic sea battles. On this holiday you walk through history in three very different landscapes on three very different islands amid this beautiful archipelago.
