learn about the island’s rich history
The island of Crete has been subject to myriad cultural influences over the centuries, from Minoans and Greeks, to Romans and Venetians, all of whom have left their mark. Classical ruins are scattered across the flower-covered plains and along the rugged coast, giving you the opportunity to explore amid magnificent scenery.
The Cretan landscape is very diverse – steep olive groves and vineyards, the massifs and canyons, the jagged mountainsides and haggard planetary wastes above the woods - all embedded in brilliant, shining, dazzling air.
Patrick Leigh Fermor (The Cretan Runner)
Crete offers quite magnificent coastal walking, some of the very best you will experience in Greece, and to discover the island on foot is a rare privilege. Full of cultural interest, this holiday takes you around western Crete, passing through Aiolos, homeland of the god of the winds; the pirate country of Gramvoussa; and Elafonisi, land of the Cyclops according to Homeric legend. You enjoy rewarding, sometimes full, days of walking across rugged countryside and stay in simple, welcoming hotels and pensions.
