The picturesque villages and rural landscape of this region have changed little since the end of the Hundred Years’ War in the 15th century. Your path follows the River Dordogne and its tributary, the Ouysse, through forest and gentle green hills, in the shade of soaring cliffs, amidst green copses and golden hayfields. There are no cities and there is virtually no industry – other than the production of wine, walnut oil, truffles and foie gras, all of which you can sample as you make your leisurely progress downriver.

Both pleasures feature prominently in this walk, which takes you from the banks of this great river, along the pretty valley of the Ouysse, to the famed village of Rocamadour, the destination of pilgrims since the 12th century. The walks are leisurely, with some short but steep ascents to the limestone plateaux for splendid views over the river and the fairy-tale châteaux that stand sentinel along its banks.
