South of Lac Léman (Lake Geneva), the landscape begins a rapid and relentless rise, the vineyards giving way to the forests and rugged peaks of the Pré-alpes. This easily accessible, yet quiet, corner of Savoie is known as the Chablais, and is remarkable walking country.
This highly accessible region of high mountains, deep forests and flower-filled meadows, with its bustling alpine towns and enticing restaurants, makes the perfect walking destination.
Beautiful paths wind through deep forests, across flower-filled meadows and over high passes, rewarding you with awe-inspiring views of the majestic Mont Blanc Massif in one direction and towards Lac Léman in the other. The wildlife is equally impressive. Although you won’t see the reclusive lynxes, brown bears and wolves which inhabit the region’s remotest corners, you should keep your eyes peeled for marmots scampering across the meadows, ibex and chamois negotiating rocky crags with effortless agility, and bearded vultures gliding on the thermals.
Another great feature of this holiday is the accommodation: you stay in welcoming and comfortable hotels (two of which have a swimming pool) and are treated to delicious regional cuisine incorporating a range of dried and smoked meats, as well as Savoie’s excellent cheeses.
