Holiday information

Zürich

Switzerland’s largest city is a thriving place, not only economically, but culturally, too. Set enviably on the northern shores of its eponymous lake, and with views to the Alps, it is a city with a broad appeal.

Bahnhofstrasse with its banks and designer shops symbolises Zürich’s prosperity, while famous political, religious and other figures are celebrated with statues dotted across the city. Water is another common theme – besides the lake and the River Limmat which flows past the handsome Old Town, the city is decorated with around 1,030 fountains, some of them hundreds of years old, others built in Art Deco style. Art galleries, too, are found in abundance, along with a wealth of museums that cater for a wide range of interests.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • Notes for a self-guided walking tour included
If you are arriving in Zürich by train, you will find yourself at the top of the magnificent Bahnhofstrasse, a 1.4-kilometre-long boulevard running along the old course of the city walls from the railway station to the shores of Lake Zürich. Lined with chic boutiques, as well as the headquarters of several banks, it is one of the city’s major focal points.

Immediately to the east of this is the picturesque Old Town. It is easy to lose yourself among the winding, cobbled streets here, but with our detailed walking notes as a guide you will navigate seamlessly through the city, keeping your own pace and detouring as and when you wish. Pass the cluster of artisans’ studios on the Schipfe; the Renaissance town hall; the huge clock face of St Peter’s Church (the largest in Europe, measuring 8.7 metres in diameter); and the distinctive stained glass windows of Fraumünster, which were created by Marc Chagall in the 1970s. Cross the river and you’ll soon arrive beneath the graceful twin towers of Grossmünster Cathedral. In summer, it is worth climbing the south tower for views over the city’s rooftops.
  • Ascend Uetliberg
The bar adjoining the city observatory offers excellent vantage point over the city, but the best views of all are enjoyed by Uetliberg, the 855-metre summit on the western edge of Zürich – on a clear day you can see across the lake and towards the Alps. Once the first snow of winter arrives, the hiking trails across its slopes are converted into toboggan runs.
  • Art & artefacts
Many of the city’s numerous museums focus on art, not least Zürich’s centrepiece, the Kunsthaus, arguably the best art gallery in Switzerland and home to works by Swiss artists such as Alberto Giacometti, as well as paintings by Edvard Munch, Picasso, Monet and Chagall. In addition, there are galleries devoted to Dadaism (the movement was formed here in 1916), furniture, arts and crafts, conceptual art, design, and non-European art. The range of other museums caters for all interests, from the Swiss National Museum with its large collection of artefacts charting Swiss history from prehistoric times onwards, to the Civil Defence Museum housed in an underground bunker, via toys, trams, evolution, money and early sea creatures.

Most museums are closed one day a week (usually, but not exclusively, Monday), while a small number are only open one or two days a week. Please check individual websites for up-to-date opening times.
