Discover Madrid - as a complete contrast, why not add on a couple of nights in vibrant Madrid, if flying via Spain' capital?

  • self-guided hotel-to-hotel walking, luggage transported
  • perfectly-preserved medieval villages
  • charming and welcoming hotels
  • option to undertake the journey with a donkey

The rolling foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama, just north of Madrid, are a well-kept secret. It is a land of handsome medieval villages, fairy-tale castles, dramatic caves and canyons, and glorious scenery.
The air is clean and clear, scented with thyme and rosemary and, as the sun dips, we stop to paddle below the perfect little fortified town of Pedraza.

Clover Stroud, The Observer, 2009
Walk through magnificent scented woodland, across expanses of wild grassland and along ancient transhumance routes travelled since the Middle Ages by huge flocks sheep in search of fresh pastures, reaching perfectly preserved medieval villages where time seems to have stood still. To lighten the load, you can even opt to take a donkey with you!
