One of Italy’s last remaining ‘undiscovered’ regions, Basilicata – or Lucania, as it is also poetically known – nevertheless boasts an astonishing wealth of sights and places of interest thanks to its rich and colourful history (it was settled by the Greeks, the Byzantines and the Normans). Equally intriguing are the contrasts in the scenery, which ranges from Dolomite-like mountain peaks to wide-open expanses of pastureland.
New Year here may be a lively affair, but what I really love about this place is the tranquillity, and the views across the fields to the hills beyond.
Kay D'Souza, Regional Manager for Italy
This is very much Italy’s deep south, with a slower rhythm to daily life. However, New Year is a lively affair, and you will enjoy authentic celebrations in the company of your genial and highly praised hosts, Fulvio and Cinzia Spada, who run the wonderful agriturismo in which you stay. By day, you can take your time to explore the numerous ancient towns and archaeological sites – which you can see at their best in the tranquillity of winter – making for a relaxed and enjoyable start to the new year.
