We have long offered the Auberge d’Inxent as a weekend break in France – located just 39 miles from Calais, it’s easy to reach, yet you feel as though you are in the heart of France. There are sleepy villages set in pretty valleys, Flemish market towns with elegant step-gabled houses, and that distinctive French rhythm to life, all of which make it a wonderful setting for relaxing birthday weekend breaks and other celebrations.

A trained sommelier, Monsieur Six is passionate about food – he even puts maps on some menus so that you can see where the ingredients have been sourced. When I arrived, he’d just returned from the family’s trout pond laden with fish to serve at dinner that night.

Inxent is a delightful hamlet in the lush Course Valley east of Le Touquet, one of the most attractive regions close to the ports.
