green, romantic landscapes
idyllic towns steeped in history
rewarding cycling
rich regional cuisine
Rounded green hills, Romanesque churches veiled by cypresses, and the slight haziness which softens the scenery further, lend an undeniable romance to Umbria. This serene land of saints – St Francis was one of many to be born here – is rewarding cycling country, not only because of the views, but also because of the timeless, medieval towns and villages which seemingly crown every undulation.
Each town is a treasure trove of art, from frescoes depicting the lives of Umbria’s many saints, to works by great painters such as Perugino immortalising the romantic scenery.
On this fascinating holiday, you discover some of the most handsome towns and villages – including charming Spoleto and pink-stoned Spello – before finishing in the most famous of them all, Assisi. As none of the cycle rides is overly long, you have plenty of time to soak up the medieval atmosphere of these places; to admire the beautiful Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance architecture, as well as the superb frescoes which adorn many of the region’s churches; and to enjoy the rich gastronomy for which Umbria is renowned.
