Extend your stay
If you are flying via cosmopolitan Barcelona, add on a city break for a contrast to your cycling holiday.
  • self-guided hotel-to-hotel cycling, luggage transported
  • gentle cycling discovery
  • two distinct landscapes
  • rich birdlife
  • excellent seafood

The Ebro, one of Spain’s five great rivers, is a major feature of southern Catalonia’s landscape as it nears the end of its meandering journey to reach the sea. It flows through two distinct landscapes, which invite leisurely exploration on two wheels: fertile farmland planted with olive, orange and almond groves, and the fascinating Ebro Delta, a patchwork of rice fields and shallow lagoons that shelters thousands of migratory birds.
Purple herons swoop and twirl across the bow, turning tricks for the binoculars. Fish pirouette out of the river. Flamingos preen on the bank. It's as if the whole river is showing off.

The Independent
Beginning inland, you follow scenic vías verdes, canal paths and quiet lanes on a discovery of ancient towns and villages surrounded by fragrant orchards and olive groves. The latter part of the route explores a very different landscape, that of the Ebro Delta, a protected reserve that is rich in birdlife and which produces the local rice that is used in delicious seafood paellas.
