Andalucia, Spain’s dazzling ‘deep south’, is one of Europe’s most entrancing regions. Brilliant white towns and villages dot a landscape of rugged mountains clothed in the remnants of ancient oak forests. The area is ideal for exploring by bike, with quiet mountain roads contouring the hills and inviting vía verde (disused railway tracks) taking you through the heart of the mountains and along country lanes which offer incredible views. Look out, too, for Bonelli’s eagles and griffon vultures gliding through the skies.
Cutting through the heart of the dramatic limestone sierra along the course of the old Olvera railway was a real highlight.
Tour the famed Andalucian white villages as you skirt the rugged, but beautiful, Grazalema Sierra before cycling along some dramatic sections of the vía verde. You start and finish in the most famous pueblo blanco of all - Ronda. This route links eight of the classic white villages of Southern Spain and takes you through very varied landscapes. Travelling on winding country roads, you experience the rolling hills and plains of the lowlands, before cutting through the sierra along the course of the old Olvera railway - all in all, a fascinating journey through this historic corner of Moorish Spain.
