East of the captivating city of Innsbruck, the dramatic peaks of the mighty Kitzbühler Alps tower over the wide River Inn as it meanders gently through some of Austria’s most outstanding landscapes. This is the heart of the Alps – snow-capped mountains, steep forested slopes and flower-filled meadows – dotted with neat villages, each with its own traditions and unique charm.
While it’s true that its status as Austria’s most beautiful village means that Alpbach is well known, I was surprised by how quiet it is, even when I visited in August. There’s a tangible feeling of tradition and – as you’d expect in a region renowned for its hospitality – it’s a very friendly village.

Nestling quietly in a peaceful valley, Alpbach justifies its proud claim as Austria’s ‘most beautiful village’; the balconies and window boxes of its traditional chalet-style houses overflow with colourful blooms. In keeping with their surroundings, the Tyrolean Farmhouse Apartments are in handsome buildings, with equally attractive and well appointed interiors, and make a wonderful base from which to explore the Tyrol and its many waymarked paths.
