The extraordinary Ebro Delta in southernmost Catalonia, two hours south of Barcelona, offers a landscape unlike any other in our programme. Here, at the end of its languorous journey across northern Spain, the mighty River Ebro has created a vast wetland area that is home to over 300 species of bird.
It was while I was visiting the Ebro Delta that I had the best seafood I’ve ever tasted in my life – the sweetest oysters and also a seafood fideua, a sort of paella with noodles. All the ingredients were so fresh, it was out of this world!
Mariana Mier y Teran, Operations Team
This is the most important wetland in Spain and the changing colours of the rice – from green to gold – mark the different seasons, as do the visiting birds, which include large numbers of flamingos. This patchwork of lagoons, salt pans, marshes, rice fields, sand dunes and virgin beaches is criss-crossed by canals and waterways on which you can punt or fish, and the flat terrain makes for fantastic cycling too. Right in the heart of it all are the Delta Cottages, converted fishermen’s cottages with thatched roofs, perfect bases from which to explore this unique landscape.
