About La Palma >At around 3 million years old, La Palma is one of the ‘youngest’ of the Canary Islands, but this does not mean that its landscapes are any the less dramatic or that its wildlife is any the less fascinating. In fact, it boasts the most diverse flora of the archipelago, including the dragon tree, an ancient palm with narrow leaves endemic to the Canary Islands. So enchanting is the scenery that La Palma is often referred to as La Isla Bonita (beautiful isle). This is complemented by incredibly clear skies, free of light pollution, that lend the island to star-gazing – an important observatory sits at one of the highest points. The two most striking features of the landscape are the barrancos (deep, dry ravines) and the Caldera de Taburiente, a 1.5-km-deep crater surrounded by mountains. There are distinctive African influences in the traditional cuisine, in which pork, goat, rabbit, chicken and fish, such as sea bream and sea bass, feature widely, often served with spicy mojo sauce.
  • delightful cottages converted from traditional Canarian buildings
  • self-guided, single-centre walking
  • varied walking in contrasting landscapes, route notes provided
  • discover dramatic volcanoes, beaches of black sand and tropical forests
  • 7 days' car hire included
  • available all year

There is an undeniable thrill to exploring beautiful La Palma, land of dramatic volcanoes, tropical forests and beaches of fine black sand. The differences between the lush, tree-clad north and the starker, volcanic south of the island are striking, and the barrancos (ravines) which have been carved into the landscape make for such dramatic scenery that you never know what to expect as you round the next bend.

This small, yet varied, island is a delight to explore, with inviting paths leading down steep lush gorges to secluded coves of volcanic sands.

Known locally as 'La Isla Bonita' (the pretty isle), this is an island to be discovered at leisure. With a week in your own characterful self-catering cottage and an included hire car, you can do just this, falling easily into the gentle rhythms of this friendly, laid-back island and taking things very much at your own pace. We provide walking notes so that you can explore on foot, but equally you may prefer to sit back and unwind, making the most of the island's benevolent year-round climate and black sandy beaches.
