The Val di Merse, nestling amid the Sienese hills, is a wonderfully undiscovered corner of western Tuscany, midway between the popular Chianti region and the lesser-known Maremma. The hilly inland terrain is studded with ancient farmhouses and crisscrossed by quiet, winding roads, once populated only by migrant charcoal burners and wandering shepherds, tending their flocks of sheep.
We were esconced in the kind of simple, family-run trattoria you dream of happening upon in Italy, and then we were drinking in the scent of jasmine that seemed to be planted outside every other house.
Sunday Telegraph
Today, it makes a perfect region for leisurely exploration and discovery, with Siena’s Renaissance treasures, the romantic abbey of San Galgano, atmospheric San Gimignano, historic Massa Marittima and the beaches of the Gulfo Baratti all within easy reach.
