The green rolling hills of Piedmont’s southern wine-producing region, dotted with hill-top castles and ancient towers, gradually give way to the more mountainous landscapes of the Alps. Amid this spectacular scenery lie the famous Italian lakes of Como and Maggiore, drawing artists, poets and tourists for centuries with their magical atmosphere and striking scenery. It is here you find the lesser-known, but equally picturesque, Lake Orta.

What struck me was the serenity and tranquil beauty of the lake, less developed than its larger neighbours, and pleasantly quiet, even in August. The villa’s location is perfect, with fantastic views across the lake.

This small, glacial lake is surrounded by high hills blanketed in chestnut and beech woods, with small medieval villages dotted along its shores and a picturesque island at its heart, the Isola di San Giulio.
Given the majesty of its surroundings, the Lake Orta Villa is fittingly grand, and the high-quality, elegant apartments make wonderful bases from which to explore the region on foot or by car.
