Extend your stay
All hotels make excellent choices for extra nights, with plenty of walking opportunities from each village.
Why not take the train?
You can leave London St Pancras or Ebbsfleet in the morning and be at your destination by the evening, making it an excellent (not to mention environmentally friendly) way to reach this holiday. You can relax right from the start of your journey as Eurostar services whisk you through the Channel Tunnel to connect with the world-famous French high-speed TGV trains in either Paris or Lille. We reserve seats for you, there is plenty of luggage space, and refreshments are available on board.
You may even break your journey in Paris if you are travelling via the capital. Sit back and enjoy a truly great rail journey! Look for the ‘by rail’ prices in the Prices & Travel section, where you will also find journey details.
world-famous journey by rail
stay at three charming 4-star hotels in idyllic settings
great walking in breathtaking scenery, route notes provided
The magnificent snow-covered Alps are a majestic sight in winter, and even more so on a bright summer’s day when the wide green valleys are carpeted with lush pasture and colourful wild flowers. Towering above the peaceful meadows, dotted with small picturesque villages and isolated traditional farms, the awe-inspiring mountain scenery is both spellbinding and breathtaking.
Of the walks we did above Zermatt, I particularly enjoyed our first, which took us into a lunar landscape in which the rocks either side of the path were covered in lime-green lichen. We were too high up to hear cowbells, but we did walk accompanied by the shrill of marmots.
Beth Hancock, Marketing Team
This glorious journey centres on the famous Glacier Express, travelling from the well-kept secret that is the Engadine Valley in the east, to the high mountains surrounding chic Zermatt in the south via the dramatic Oberalp Pass (2,033 metres). We provide suggestions for rewarding walks from each of our high-quality hotels, though you may prefer simply to sit back and enjoy your surroundings, or to take advantage of the included travel pass to explore further afield (again our documentation suggests a variety of worthwhile excursions). The views from the train’s panoramic windows are mesmerising and unforgettable; the walks from the charming hotels exhilarating and truly splendid.
