Extend your stay
Such is the wealth of cities, that we’ve had to feature those in the
centre and south
on a separate page, though it’s very easy to combine cities from both selections.
Combine with an activity holiday
For a real contrast, add one (or more!) of these cities to your walking or cycling holiday.
• self-guided, multi-centre journey
• choose your own itinerary, travelling between cities by rail
• detailed notes provided for a self-guided walking tour in each city
• stay in stylish hotels which reflect the character of the city
Everyone should try to visit Venice once in their lifetime, but there are other cities which are also very worthy of discovery and which, in a way, reveal more about Italy’s true character. On the Mediterranean Coast is Genova, an elegant city proud of its sea-faring past; beneath the Alps lies Turin, exuding Baroque splendour; east of the lakes, Verona, with its rich Roman heritage, reveals itself to be about more than just the story of Romeo and Juliet; while Padova and red-brick, gastronomic Bologna can both claim to be the seats of some of Europe’s oldest universities. Take some time to explore any one of these and you’ll discover a wealth of history, architectural styles and great art.
As a company which prides itself on its flexibility, it’s only right that we let you decide the route and length of your journey.
Italy’s efficient, inexpensive rail network makes it easy to travel from one city to another by rail, and for this reason we are leaving the exact itinerary up to you. We make some suggestions in the itinerary section of cities that combine particularly well, but which – and how many – cities you visit, and how long you stay in each, is your decision. Wherever you choose, you can explore at your own pace accompanied by our carefully researched cultural notes; we provide details for a self-guided walking tour of each city, taking in not only the famous sights, but little-known districts and hidden gems, too, that fully reveal the essence of the city.
