Perhaps unsurprisingly given their fantastical shapes which glow rosy pink under the setting sun, tales of witches, wizards and various spirits have long surrounded the jagged peaks of the Dolomites. Beneath these striking limestone mountains stretches the Seiseralm Plateau, the highest mountain plateau in Europe, a patchwork of bottle-green forests and lush meadows which makes a wonderful summer playground.

What seized our imaginations was the prospect of getting in among those magical mountains (there are strong local beliefs in witches) exploring their valleys, scaling their summits – and then gorging ourselves at day’s end.

What makes our walking holiday in the Dolomites so perfect for families is its flexibility. There is a choice of routes for each of the two days on which you walk between hotels – depending on the age and ability of your family, you can choose to amble across meadows and through woodland, stopping to snaffle wild fruit and to watch the crickets and butterflies dancing around your ankles; or enjoy more challenging but very rewarding walks amid the high peaks. The other four days are free to spend as you choose, either walking (again with a choice of routes), mountain biking, visiting museums or simply relaxing.
