East of the captivating city of Innsbruck, the dramatic peaks of the mighty Kitzbühler Alps tower over the wide River Inn as it meanders gently through some of Austria’s most outstanding landscapes. This is the heart of the Alps – green slopes, scented forests and flower-filled meadows – dotted with neat villages, each with its own traditions and unique charm.
While it’s true that its status as Austria’s most beautiful village means that Alpbach is well known, I was surprised by how quiet it is, even when I visited in August. There’s a tangible feeling of tradition and – as you’d expect in a region renowned for its hospitality – it’s a very friendly village.
