Hotel Votsala, Thermi, Lesvos

• very friendly B-class hotel right by the sea • attentive service • large gardens • bikes, canoes & pedalos for guests' use

"The Hotel Votsala epitomised everything we look for in a Greek holiday.  The whole ethos of the hotel and the ambience of the staff made this the best holiday we have had for a long time.  Nothing was too much trouble and yet everything was kept at a very personal and informal level.  We cannot recommend the hotel too highly and will definitely be returning!"

Hotel VotsalaAt the Votsala, hosts Ioannis and Daphne offer the epitome of Greek hospitality, their sole aim being to make your holiday as relaxing and enjoyable as possible. Ioannis was born in his grandfather’s hotel in Mytillini, and grew up spending his summers working in his father’s hotel, the Votsala. He has spent his life in the hospitality business and so it was only natural that he should one day take over. Once he met Daphne, it all fell into place.

The welcome here is so warm and genuine that most of the business comes from guests who come back year after year. There are no frills and unnecessary luxuries, though the 42 bedrooms are spacious. They all have a private shower room, a fridge and kettle for making drinks, and a terrace or balcony, most of which look across the garden to the sea. There is no shortage of space to relax in the hotel - it has an indoor and outdoor bar, a small library and a lounge with a fireplace - but you will probably want to spend most of your time outdoors.

Hotel VotsalaIndeed, the hotel boasts nine acres of gardens scattered with sun loungers for guests, making it easy to find a quiet corner in which to relax with a book or simply to sunbathe. Bikes, canoes and pedalos are all available free of charge and, when you need to cool off, you can swim or snorkel from the jetty. Breakfast is served every morning near the water’s edge, and the hotel has its own good restaurant which serves themed meals or barbecues at least once a week, or you can dine at the tavernas serving freshly caught fish on Thermi’s waterfront.

Ioannis has a real passion for walking and loves to take guests out with him, or to pass on information to anyone wanting to go it alone. The walks either start directly from the hotel, from where you can walk to the village of Thermi, or from St Raphael’s monastery you can visit the four caves. A short bus or taxi ride away, there are interesting walks that take in thermal baths and many of the surrounding villages. You can also enjoy a boat trip to the south beach of Tarti and the baths at the thermal springs of Gera.
