Spilia Village Hotel, near Kolimbari, Crete
• A-class hotel in traditional village setting • restaurant on site • swimming pool • sleep 2-4 (standard rooms or suites)
Located at the heart of a quiet and traditional village, this beautiful conversion of an olive mill and surrounding stone cottages still incorporates many original features, while offering modern facilities.
The 30 rooms (including 6 suites) each have satellite television, air-conditioning and a minibar, as well as luxurious bathrooms with jacuzzi-style baths or hydro-massage showers. They are stylishly and comfortably furnished, some with four-poster beds, all with high-quality fabrics in subtle colours and traditional styles. The suites have a separate living area with two sofa beds; there are also a couple of split-level junior suites with an open-plan layout and living area.
A simple but rich buffet breakfast is served in the morning using fresh local produce including cheese, cakes, bread, yoghurt and fruit. The hotel’s restaurant, the traditional taverna ‘Halara’ serving international as well as Cretan dishes with an extensive local wine list, is located under the arches of an old Venetian mansion. The majority of the ingredients are purchased directly from farmers from the surrounding villages and all the fruit and vegetables are grown locally.
There is a large swimming pool in the gardens in the orange groves and if you are feeling energetic, there is an indoor pool, gym, sauna and games room. Cycling can also be organised from reception - staff will be happy to give you routes through the local countryside and the surrounding villages.
Spilia actually takes its name from a group of caves in the hillside above, one of which contains the little chapel of Saint Yiannis. The land around the village is particularly fertile and covered with a patchwork of olive groves, vineyards and small vegetable gardens. Nearby, in Kolimbari (about 10 minutes from your hotel) there is a good choice of waterfront tavernas, noted for their fresh fish. There are also a couple of good tavernas Spilia itself, or choose from others in nearby Ravdouca or Kissamos (formally known as Kastelli).
