Hotel Porto Vitylo, Neo Itylo, Peloponnese
As soon as you step through the door of this friendly hotel, you know you have arrived somewhere special. Built in the traditional style of the Maniot towers, the rather dramatic exterior gives no indication as to the stylish, warm décor of the interior. With its terracotta tile floors and beamed wooden ceilings, the reception area sets the tone for the rest of the hotel. In the bedrooms (33 rooms and 7 suites), beautiful cast iron bedsteads combine with hand-painted wooden chests and charming details such as vintage telephones to exude an old-world charm, though modern comforts include a well-appointed shower room and air-conditioning. If all that were not enough, the Porto Vitylo enjoys a secluded location on the edge of Neo Itylo, just 70 metres from the village’s sand and shingle beach. Neo Itylo has a few tavernas, cafés and one small shop. It is an ancient place and the high town village of Oitylon is supposed to be mentioned by Homer. A maze of narrow streets and old churches make the high town very appealing and the monastery below, with its fine frescoes, is also well worth a visit. The hotel also makes a superb base to explore this fascinating region of the deeper Mani and is just a short drive from Aeropolis, the Diros Caves, the amazing medieval city of Monemvasia and the pretty fishing village of Kardamili.
