Perantzada 1811 Art HotelPerantzada 1811 Art Hotel, Vathy, Ithaca

• romantic A-class boutique hotel • infinity pool overlooking the harbour • four-poster beds in most rooms

Hotels as romantic as the Perantzada 1811 are few and when Haris Tmaris, owner of the Emelisse, fell instantly in love with the 19th-century neoclassical mansion, he felt compelled to restore it to its former glory in the days before the famous 1953 earthquake that razed most of the island's capital, Vathy, to the ground.

<empty>Adorning the walls are works by famous Greek and foreign artists so as to enhance the hotel’s special ambience. The stone outer terraces have been transformed by large wicker chairs and Persian rugs thrown across them, protected from the sun by a white, bougainvillea-clad pergola; with the new addition of the gorgeous infinity pool, this has to be the most romantic spot for gazing at the clear skies with the lights of the harbour twinkling in the background.

Behind the pillars and powder-blue façade lie 12 compact but very comfortable double rooms, all of which are individually and imaginatively decorated. White walls contrast with bright reds, bold yellows and vivid greens, giving rise to names such as the ‘bubble gum room’ and ‘the little garden room’. All rooms are equipped with satellite television, air-conditioning, a delightful shower room complete with ‘Korres’ natural products, and a minibar. Some have a balcony or sea views (or both), while the majority boast a four-poster bed for that extra touch of romance.

<empty>A superb breakfast of home-made cakes, pastries, pies, and fresh juices is served on the little terrace overlooking the rooftops and the harbour. The latter is a two-minute walk away, and offers a large choice of shops and tavernas, while the nearest beach a ten-minute stroll.

Ithaca is perfect walking country, whether you choose to just walk through the olive groves down to one of the many little coves surrounding the island, or whether you decide to try something a little more challenging. One of the most popular walks in Ithaca starts from Anoghi and leads to the windmills near Kioni, a wonderful place from which to view the spectacular sunrise. An easy walk on the Marathis Plateau takes you to the Arethousa Fountain, from where the views of the spectacular scenery are breathtaking.
