"This is a really beautiful property and I highly recommend it to other potential guests. We had a really good holiday. The Old Stone House was beautiful, in a lovely location – and very well maintained. I own a holiday property abroad and so I recognise the high standards achieved by the owners of this property. I have only praise and will definitely rebook in the future."
The Pelion Peninsula is one of the most beautiful regions in Greece, leading out into the crystal turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea from the town of Volos. From pine-covered mountains and traditional stone villages to beautiful sandy beaches and small quiet coves, Pelion has something to offer to each and every visitor. The town of Volos has a long waterfront lined with pastry shops, cafés, bars, restaurants and mezedopolia where they serve the traditional drink, tsipouro, with local delicacies, and is just a short drive from Vizitsa.
With winding cobbled streets and old stone houses, historic Vizitsa is one of the Pelion’s prettiest villages and is made all the more alluring by its elevated location overlooking the majestic Pagasitic Gulf. The village has a few shops selling local produce, and some very good tavernas - being popular with visitors from Athens and Thessaloniki at weekends, food is of a high standard here. Although situated high in the hills, Vizitsa is just ten minutes’ drive from the beaches to the west, while those of Agios Ioannis to the east are a scenic hour away.
The region’s many kalderimi or paved mule tracks make this great walking country, and we can supply walking routes on request. Follow these traditional pack horse routes of a bygone era, and you might yet meet the local friendly inhabitants transporting wood or olives by mule or donkey.
The breathtaking coastal views enjoyed by the village are shared by this exquisitely restored 120-year-old house with its bright, welcoming interiors that embrace both traditional furnishings and modern comforts. The owners, Olga and Malcolm, an Anglo-Greek couple who live and work in Athens, have taken particular care with the décor and the house is full of fascinating features that lend it a genuinely homely feel.
The house is built on a slope, and is entered via the upper of three levels after descending 20 steps from the road. Here there is a large living-cum-dining room, complete with an old-style cushioned window seat, television, video, wood-burning fire and doors to the large, panoramic veranda. Steps lead down to the middle floor with two bedrooms (one twin and one double), and two bathrooms (one of them en suite). A few more steps bring you to the lower floor, containing a small kitchen with full cooker (there is another oven outside), washing machine, percolator, kettle and toaster. There is also a pleasant terrace - partly shaded by a pergola and perfect for alfresco dining - as well a barbecue with a separate eating area.
