Mythos Suites, Rethimnon, Crete

Pool, Mythos Suites• charming hotel in the heart of Rethimnon town • quiet base for exploring the area • romantic hideaway • studios sleep 2, suites sleep up to 4

It is hard to resist the intriguing port of Rethimnon, with its magnificent Venetian harbour and lively, sophisticated atmosphere. During medieval times, it was one of the most important of the Venetian ports and, in the winding back streets behind the fortezza (fortress), you will find evidence of Turkish and Venetian architecture, as well as many colourful boutiques and eateries. The town’s Renaissance festival runs from June until September, hosting theatre, music and dance. Rethimnon also makes a charming, central base from which to explore Crete’s many attractions.

Typical bedroomTucked away behind the main cathedral square, in the heart of the old town and just 100 metres from the harbour front, this boutique hotel, with eleven suites and four studios, is both exquisite and completely in harmony with its setting. Nadia, the owner, has lovingly restored the 16th-century building, maintaining all of its traditional character, and creating a haven of tranquillity.

Through the delightful entrance you walk into a peaceful courtyard that sets the tone of understated elegance. Pink bougainvillea contrasts with the soft yellows and greens of the old Venetian house. To the rear is another colourful atrium with a small swimming pool backed by more bright bougainvillea clinging to the surrounding walls, perfect for cooling off after a day’s sightseeing.

<empty>The studios and suites are spacious, with elegant and traditional furnishings. All have a shower room, small balcony or outside sitting area, fully equipped kitchenettes, air-conditioning, telephones and satellite television. The studios sleep two people and are on one level, while the suites, mostly on two levels, have a large open-plan kitchen and living area with two sofa beds and an upstairs bedroom, many with beautiful old iron beds.

Breakfast is served in the handsome mint-green tearoom and is a simple but delicious buffet with such delights as freshly squeezed orange juice, homemade marmalades and jams, local cheese and organic cucumbers and tomatoes.
