Mistral Hotel, Hydra
• friendly B-class hotel converted from traditional stone mansion • great location, only 3 minutes’ walk from port
One of Hydra’s best-kept secrets, this charming and tastefully decorated hotel is located just a short walk from the port and the stylish sophistication of Hydra Town. Renovated from traditional stone in typically warm, pastel shades, the hotel is a relaxing retreat from the outside world.
There are 18 en-suite bedrooms, including a studio for up to four people and several more spacious superior rooms to which you can upgrade if you wish. All have an attractive and modern feel, and are equipped with satellite television, internet access, a small fridge and air-conditioning. A generous home-made breakfast is served in the beautiful courtyard surrounded by stone walls and planted with ivy, colourful flowers and scented lemon trees - a perfect start to your day.
Hydra is popular with wealthy Athenians and so standards and levels of service are high. This is also a totally traffic-free town and island, excepting a few essential service vehicles. Most goods are moved by trolley, and donkeys and mules are available for those who cannot walk, or for excursions to the monasteries and churches scattered over the island. Development has been strictly limited making this a unique island for those who want to relax, paint, and explore quaint, steeply rising streets.
For those who like an active holiday, you can take a boat trip from Hydra to Bisti Bay at the southwestern tip of the island, where you can hire snorkelling gear or try kayaking. If you want some exercise on dry land, you could undertake the strenuous hike up to the 19th-century Profitas Ilias monastery, 2 kilometres away, and the nearby convent of Agia Efpraxia. The excellent views reward the effort.
If you prefer to simply stay put, why not while away your days with the locals in the waterside cafés that line the harbour, playing the odd game of backgammon and watching the ferries come and go, before wandering down to a quiet taverna for dinner?
Whatever your plans on this idyllic island, you will leave feeling that, just for a while, you escaped the hustle and bustle of the 21st century.
