The Marianna, Nauplion, Peloponnese

• B-class hotel in excellent location underneath the citadel • excellent base for exploring the Argolid’s anient sites

MariannaBy far a favourite of Nauplion’s pensions is the Marianna, a truly delightful place right by the lower walls of the citadel. The views are fabulous, particularly from the rooftop terrace, a place to linger over breakfast or a pre-dinner drink while you gaze over the pantile roofs to the walls of the formidable Palamidi fortress, with the bourtzi (‘fortified island’) and the mountains of the Peloponnese beyond.

Beautiful and peaceful despite being in a busy town, this family-run hotel is full of character and a great place to relax. It was converted from an old town house and has narrow staircases leading to comfortable rooms, all charmingly decorated. Most rooms are in the main building, but there are others in a renovated row of village houses just below, which can be accessed from the hotel or from the street. The en-suite bedrooms mostly look over the rooftops towards the bright blue sea; some even have a balcony.

MariannaIn the breakfast room, you will be treated to home-made lemonade and marmalade, from the family’s lemon and orange groves. There is a short pebble beach just 15 minutes’ walk from the hotel although it is possible to hire cycles locally.

There is limited parking 30 metres away though a car is unnecessary to explore the sites of Nauplion, as the hotel is just a stone’s throw away from the city centre and the harbour. Everything is in walking distance and you are right in front of the 900 steps of the Palamidi, perfect for the energetic to climb before breakfast and see the sun rise over the rooftops. There are many restaurants to walk out to in the evening - atmospheric little tavernas tucked in the backstreets behind the Catholic Church and Agios Spirodon, or the waterside fish tavernas, chic restaurants and cafeterias on the harbour front opposite the bourtzi.

If you choose to hire a car for some or all of your holidays (call us for details and prices) you are a short drive from the ancient theatre of Epidavros, the city of Argos (Jason and the Argonauts’ home) and seaside resort of Tolo.
