Small and exquisitely decorated, boutique hotels like this one are usually tucked away in the hills or in the heart of a city, making Villa Kynthia’s location, 200 metres from the sandy beach of the pretty coastal village of Panormo, a welcome exception.

The hotel, originally built in 1898, was a family home that the owners, Adonis and his family, visited regularly on holiday from Heraklion. When they were offered the opportunity to buy the house they felt compelled to share their relaxing little holiday haven with others, restoring the property to its former glory to include five beautiful suites. Each has wonderfully unique décor: a romantic four-poster bed in one, antique iron beds in others, Chinese screens and drapes, polished teak floors, fascinating wall murals, or overhead timbers - every room has its own character.

The service is excellent and a delightful breakfast incorporating local and home-made produce is served in the pretty courtyard that contains the swimming pool. They also serve light snacks and drinks throughout the day, though with the superb waterside restaurants of Panormo a few steps away, finding a spot to dine should never be too difficult.

All rooms have a bath or shower room, air-conditioning, minibar and television and are mostly located on the first floor with views over the courtyard and pool. Artemis is a spacious room with an en suite bathroom and an oriental-style screen separating a double bed from two single sofa beds. Odyssey has a similar layout but, unlike the other rooms, looks to the village and the sea. Pandora is slightly smaller with a double bed and a single sofa bed, en suite shower room and a terrace.

Nefeli is the smallest room with a double bed and a private shower room accessed by crossing the hall. The only room on the ground floor, Rea has a separate living room with two single sofa beds, a kitchenette and a double bedroom with en suite bathroom.
