Set in the arc of a magnificent bay above a sandy beach, the Istron Bay Hotel looks out onto a scene of azure serenity: deep-blue skies, the turquoise ocean and the refreshing blue of the lovely swimming pool, around which palm trees and cascading pink bougainvillea lend a tropical feel.

Superior rooms have sea views, a bathroom, a sitting area and a large balcony or a terrace, and are equipped with air-conditioning, satellite television, telephone and minibar. You can upgrade to a garden suite with a sea view, and our arrangements include dinner in the hotel’s renowned à la carte ‘Meltemi’ restaurant. Interconnecting rooms are available on request.

Sun loungers surround the huge sea-water pool (12 x 28m), located above the beach. There is also a poolside snack bar and beachside taverna and, if you are feeling energetic, you can enjoy a game of tennis, a walking tour, go scuba diving, try out some water sports or learn traditional Greek dancing (pay locally). The hotel also runs an entertainment programme, while families benefit from the free Mini Club for four to seven-year-olds. Additional hotel facilities include an internet corner, masseuse and hairdresser.

For anyone interested in learning about (and sampling) typical Cretan cuisine, there is a special gastronomic option, which includes lunch and dinner each day, plus a cookery demonstration. Good food is very much part of this special hotel’s philosophy and it rightly prides itself on the quality of the cuisine.

Crete is perfect walking country, whether you walk with an experienced guide or prefer to do your own thing. In the winter months the island is usually blessed with moderate temperatures and the almond blossom first appears in February. In March and April, the wild flower displays cover the landscape in bright profusion and temperatures are usually good for walking right into May and early June. You may be more inclined to relax round the pool in the height of summer but, with temperatures cooling and the high season crowds gone, September and October are once again perfect times to visit this magical island and explore the hills and mountain villages.

So comfortable is this hotel, with so many facilities and activities to hand, that we include a transfer from the airport rather than a hire car. Legend has it that this is where Theseus slew the Minotaur in his labyrinth lair, escaping only with the help of Ariadne.
