Hotel Liotope, Olympiada, Macedonia

• C-class hotel • delightful gardens • friendly atmosphere • dinner included

"The hotel lived up to recommendations, and more besides.  We will go back next year.  Great holiday!  Thank you!"

Hotel LiotopeThe Hotel Liotope, the Akrogiali’s sister hotel, is another real find in this unspoiled region, and the family extend the same warm and effusive welcome to their guests. Managed by Lulu, Dimitri’s sister, this small, 17-room characterful hotel is situated less than 50 metres from the sea.

Although not possessing the same beachfront location as the Akrogiali, the Liotope’s tranquil garden setting provides a marvellous outlook, and the sense of style and friendliness here are ample compensation. Lulu’s flair for interior design is evident throughout the hotel - each room is beautifully decorated with vibrant colour schemes, and her eye for detail results in some particularly charming decorative touches. The rooms have modern shower rooms, minibars, television and are all air-conditioned. Breakfast is served at the hotel in the mornings and, as the taverna of Hotel Akrogiali is so popular, we have included dinner there in our arrangements as well.

BedroomThe seaside fishing village of Olympiada occupies a sheltered bay on the north-east coast of Halkidiki, surrounded by green hills, and was named after Olymbias, the mother of Alexander the Great, who was exiled to nearby Stagira. The village has a few tavernas and shops, a small playground and limited water sports, but the beaches are wonderful, the ancient site of Stagira is just a stone’s throw away and you can enjoy some great walks nearby in dense woodland with dramatic scenery and spectacular waterfalls. There is even a cheese factory that you can visit by arrangement, and you can take a boat trip (pay locally) to the small islet of Kafkana.

View from the hotelIf visiting Stagira and Kafkana leaves you hungry for more, you can head further afield to ancient Amphipolis to the north or explore the three finger-like peninsulas of Halkidiki which stretch far into the Aegean. Inhabited by monks since the 10th century, the easternmost promontory is home to Mount Athos, and retains a timeless, otherworldly quality. Sithonia is the central finger and boasts an amazingly rugged coastline, as well as the attractive fishing ports of Toroni and Koufos, each with a couple of seafood tavernas, serving the freshest of fish.
