Elia Traditional Hotel & Spa, Ano Vouves, Crete
• A-class hotel offering total relaxation • swimming pool • massage facilities
If you’re looking to relax, unwind or just hide away from the world, Elia is the ultimate romantic retreat. When you have sat and watched a sunset on the raised covered terrace, surrounded by lush green hills, looking down on the picturesque bay of Kolimbari, you can understand why George, the owner, chose to renovate his grandfather’s house to create a place of tranquillity and relaxation.
Now restored to its former glory, its lush and tranquil gardens provide a beguiling haven away from the stresses of the modern world. If you do need a little extra help to unwind there are numerous treatments available – massage and Reiki, or perhaps a sauna, Turkish bath, or a dip in the tempting pool. Otherwise, simply take a nap or read in one of the hammocks in the grounds.
The nine rooms, suites and maisonettes are beautifully furnished using traditional wood. Four-poster beds or iron beds are draped with soft, light fabrics, and there are various antiques giving a traditional and romantic feel. All rooms have modern comforts such as en suite bathrooms, air-conditioning and satellite television as well as a minibar.
From the moment you wake up the pace is slow. Breakfast is a simple self-service buffet incorporating fresh, local and organic produce that can be enjoyed on the terrace, at one of the many hideaways in the gardens, or taken back to your room.
Lunch and dinner (pay locally) follow the same informalities and there is always a simple menu of fresh, organic snacks and salads on hand as well as a delicious Cretan dish for dinner – for those who cannot tear themselves away from the harmonious surroundings, or the incredible sunset that turns the hills pink.
If you do wish to ring the changes, the tempting fish tavernas and beaches of Kolimbari are a short drive away and, for the energetic, there are some delightful walks through the countryside and down to the local waterfalls.
