Dramatic gorges and cliff-top citadels

From Kalamata you pass through the dramatic, jagged Taïyetos Mountains to Mystras and the Hotel Byzantium, a friendly, family-run hotel with pleasant garden and pool, which faces the impressive medieval fortress. Explore the narrow atmospheric streets of the old town and visit the ancient ruins. In nearby Sparta, the museum and acropolis harbour are well worth a visit. From Mystras you head to the coast and the incredible citadel of Monemvasia in the sea. Access is via a narrow causeway and gate in the city walls (leave your car here), through which narrow cobbled alleys lead to the Malvasia Hotel. In the heart of this amazing fortified town, your hotel is a lovingly restored traditional building from which you can climb to the top of the Byzantine church offering great views along the coast.

To the coast for caves and kalamari

PeloponneseOn leaving Monemvasia, you head round the Gulf of Lakonikos and down to Yerolimenas, with its dramatic bay and harbour. The Kyrimai Hotel is a wonderful conversion, standing proudly on the beach. Explore the Caves of Dirou, accessible by small boat, or walk to ‘Hell’, a cave reputed to be the entrance to Hades! The following day, you head north up the coast to Kardamili and your hillside Esperides Studio, set amid wildflower meadows, and near to the picturesque waterfront, a great location for a romantic sunset dinner. You can visit the medieval castle and ancient amphitheatre in historic Kalamata, or head for the sandy beaches of Stourpa and Kitries for some gentle relaxation.
