Armonia Bay Hotel, near Kokkari, Samos

• B-class hotel in superb beach location • spectacular sea views • swimming pool

Armonia Bay HotelFrom its lofty position above the fabulous Tsamadou Beach, famed for its crystal-clear waters, the Armonia Bay Hotel looks out across the bay towards the red-tiled rooftops of Kokkari village, 3 kilometres along the coast, and beyond to Samos Town, just 10 kilometres away. Not only is this elegant hotel blessed with such a marvellous beachside location, it is also earning a much-deserved reputation for its friendly, helpful service and the warm welcome extended to guests.

With the tempting delights of several local tavernas and restaurants nearby, you have a fine excuse for an evening stroll to have dinner, though it may be more difficult to leave such breathtaking views and the temptations of the large freshwater swimming pool during the day. There is also a table tennis table and an internet café available for guests’ use. If you do decide to stray from the hotel’s comforts, the graceful, pebbly beach of Tsamadou is a pleasant short walk down through olives groves, and, should you prefer a little more exercise, you could try your hand at windsurfing at the school nearby.

Armonia Bay HotelExploring further afield, as you head inland from the north coast, you discover an idyllic landscape of orchards, pine and cypress trees, dominated by a dramatic mountain backdrop. There are many walking trails criss-crossing the island, and Manolates is the most popular starting point for the five-hour return walk to the summit of Mount Ambelos, the second-highest peak on Samos. You may also wish to visit the island’s capital, Vathy, just 12 kilometres away, or head west to Karlovassi - a sleepier and more traditional place, and near to the excellent beaches and walking routes to be found in the western part of the island.

The pretty fishing hamlet of Kokkari is very Cycladic in its style, with narrow alleys and winding back streets, now scattered with inviting restaurants and intriguing shops. The village used to be famous for its resins and sweets called lyres which can be tried and tested in the nearby cafeterias. Just outside the village is the area of Mana with the remains of the ancient temple of Asclepius. The area as a whole is a place of outstanding natural beauty, including the expanses of orchids which are now exported from the island.

Armonia Bay HotelThe Armonia Bay’s air-conditioned rooms all have en suite bathrooms, satellite television, direct-dial telephone and a minibar. There are 16 rooms (mainly double but with a few twins), five superior rooms, one suite and an apartment (please ask for details). A rich continental breakfast is served each morning and light snacks and salads are also served for lunch if required (pay locally).
